canvas/daylight

Jared Stearns

a white canvas sat in front of me
i embraced this moment
head strong
vision cleared
ready to paint my own aspirations
strong black lines outlining the foundation i set in the season of the fallen leaves
the image that i envisioned taking its true form
my own world-i thought-showing me the yellow brick road
then
a winter snowflake, and a spring blossom smudged the lines
dulling my confidence
sending me into a melodramatic blue
didn’t want to even bare looking at the image i drew
yearning for a break from the reflection shown right in my face
external sources from the scorching summers light lifted me
to raise my brush again
to dip in the aquamarine colored water
to repaint a new foundation
even with extra emotions of the doubt cursing my vision
this foundation took a new structure
something my mind never knew was possible
i fill in the primary colors i love
blue, yellow, and white
in my new image
these were always my favorite colors
even when i saw every shade of them:
the pale, the solid, and the vibrant
enveloped in these colors a new image is brightened from the golden daylight
from athlete to student
from afraid to unapologetic
from biology to
loving on the brain
